Before the U.S enters into world war 1 resident woodrow wilson signs the Jone- Shaforth act which granted U.S citizenship to the inhabitants of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was ceded to the U.S by Spain in december 1898 as part of the treaty paris that ended the spanish- Americans war. On March 2, 1917 wilson signed the Jane- Shaforth and Puerto Rico became a U.S territory. As citizens, Puerto Ricans were eventually drafted to serve during World War 1, and later during WorldWar 2 Puerto Rico became a important military naval base for the U.S army and the economy was growing.
